At 8 years old, he started playing Five Card Stud with his grandfather. By 16, he was playing in back rooms for money. At 18, he was playing so much in Atlantic City that he was nicknamed “No Home Jerome”. However, he lost.

At 21, he walked into the casino and told everyone his name was “Phil” and the tide turned. At age 24, he tried his first WSOP and won his first bracelet. The final table of the event had the likes of Amarillo Slim Preston, David “Devilfish” Ulliott, and Phil Hellmuth.

In 2006, Andy Beal challenged Phil Ivey to a heads up match. Andy is a mathematician who is well known for challenging big name professionals. The match lasted three days and at the end, Phil had won $16.6 Million from Mr. Beal.

Phil is well respected by his fellow professionals. Howard Lederer believes Ivey may be considered the best player in history when he finally retires. Barry Greenstein describes his talent as “Unmatched”.
